London-based Vania Zouravliov was born in Vladimir, Russia, and was something of a child prodigy. His skill as an artist was recognized when he was quite young and he was exhibiting internationally by the time he was 13. His influences seem solidly anachronistic, feeling more kinship to Ingres, Dürer, von Bayros, and Beardsley than anyone currently putting pen to paper.
His images tend to be darker but still extravagantly beautiful. Zouravliov can hold your eye on a disturbing or gruesome scene because he finds both inherent and applied beauty in the subject matter. There is not so much an attempt to shock as there is to share a deeply buried common fascination.
